NextRead ("we," "our," or "us") operates the NextRead application and website. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you use our service.

By creating an account or using NextRead, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. NextRead is intended for users aged 13 and older.

Account information: Email address, display name, and age group when you create an account.

Reading preferences: Genres, favorite books, reading personality (pace, tone, focus, style, series preference), and emotional goals you provide during onboarding.

Mood and session data: Energy level, desired emotion, time available, emotional boundaries, and format preferences from mood check-ins.

Reading activity: Book ratings, feedback tags, reading list status, reading progress, and notes or quotes you save.

Imported data: If you choose to import your reading history (e.g., from Goodreads), we store the titles, authors, ratings, and shelf information you upload.

Chat messages: Conversations with the NextRead AI assistant are stored to provide context for future interactions.

Usage data: We may collect basic analytics about how you interact with the app (pages visited, features used) to improve the service.

We use your information to:

• Generate personalized book recommendations based on your taste profile, mood, and reading history
• Power the AI reading companion that discusses books and answers your questions
• Track your reading progress and maintain your library
• Compute your TasteDNA — a numerical profile of your reading preferences — to improve recommendation quality
• Enable social features like public profiles and taste comparisons (only if you opt in)
• Improve and maintain the service

To generate book recommendations and power the AI chat, we send relevant portions of your data (reading preferences, mood check-in, taste profile, and conversation history) to third-party AI providers:

• Google Gemini (primary) — processes recommendation and chat requests
• Groq (Meta Llama) — used as a fallback AI provider

These providers process your data according to their own privacy policies. We only send the minimum data necessary to generate recommendations and responses. We do not sell your personal data to any AI provider or third party.

Your data is stored in a Supabase database hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. All data is protected by row-level security policies, meaning users can only access their own data.

If you use NextRead as an installed app (PWA), the service worker caches static assets locally on your device to enable faster loading. No personal data is cached on your device beyond standard browser storage.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only in these cases:

• AI providers: As described above, to generate recommendations and chat responses
• Book data APIs: We query Google Books and Open Library to fetch book metadata (covers, descriptions). Your personal data is not sent to these services.
• Public profiles: If you enable a public profile, your display name, reading stats, and shared quotes are visible to others
• Legal requirements: If required by law or to protect our rights

You have the right to:

• Access your personal data through your profile and settings
• Correct inaccurate information by editing your profile
• Delete your account and associated data by contacting us
• Export your reading data
• Withdraw consent for optional features like public profiles at any time

NextRead is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Users between 13 and 17 should have parental or guardian consent before creating an account.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice in the app or updating the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of NextRead after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
